All exams begin with the workup. The workup for exams includes greeting the patient, initial testing, review of medical history, and recording complaints and the chief complaint. During the workup, the OA acts as an extension of the doctor to complete those elements of the exam which are allowed to be delegated to an optometric assistant. This is the core of the optometric assistant position and continues even into the scribing portion of the exam: allowing the doctor to see and treat more patients than they would otherwise be able to in the same amount of time.
